Savoury Scones Recipe UK
Ingredients
- 250 grams self-raising flour
- 1/2 teaspoon ground sea salt
- 80 grams butter
- 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese divided into 2 portions
- 1/4 cup of cooked sliced ham shredded into small slices
- 1/2 teaspoon garlic puree
- 120 ml buttermilk see notes if you don?t have
- 1 egg beaten
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 220 degrees celsius
- Add the flour, butter, and salt to a food processor and blitz until a light crumb is reached
- Transfer to a bigger bowl and stir in the pepper. Paprika, sugar, and baking powder until combined
- Add half of the shredded cheese, garlic, and ham then stir gently
- Add the buttermilk and fold in without over mixing as this will lead to hard scones which will not rise well
- When ?only just? combined, tip onto a lightly floured surface then push together into a rectangle-like shape
- Cut into 6 squares and transfer to a baking sheet
- Beat the egg in a cup then brush on top of the scones then add the remainder of the cheese on top
- Bake in the centre of the oven for 12 minutes then remove
- Allow to cool completely before serving with butter
- Note – be careful not to overmix the scones after adding liquid as this is the most important part of creating a light and fluffy scone
