Easy Savoury Scones Recipe UK

If you have more of a savoury tooth than a sweet one this may be the option for you, an easy savoury scones recipe from the UK.  Served perfectly with lashings of butter.

Savory scones are less common than their sweet counterparts but are similar in texture.  With a slightly crusty outer and a fluffy but dense inside.  The addition of a little garlic with the cheese and ham in this scone offers up a little more bite than usual.

Try adding some other flavours including:

  • Chopped Chives
  • Sliced Chorizo
  • A mild chilli pepper
  • Parmesan
  • Roasted Garlic

Ingredients

  • 250 grams self-raising flour
  • ½ teaspoon ground sea salt
  • 80 grams butter
  • ½ teaspoon ground pepper
  • ½ teaspoon paprika
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese divided into 2 portions
  • ¼ cup of cooked sliced ham shredded into small slices
  • ½ teaspoon garlic puree
  • 120 ml buttermilk see notes if you don’t have
  • 1 egg beaten

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 220 degrees celsius
  • Add the flour, butter, and salt to a food processor and blitz until a light crumb is reached
  • Transfer to a bigger bowl and stir in the pepper. Paprika, sugar, and baking powder until combined
  • Add half of the shredded cheese, garlic, and ham then stir gently
  • Add the buttermilk and fold in without over mixing as this will lead to hard scones which will not rise well
  • When “only just” combined, tip onto a lightly floured surface then push together into a rectangle-like shape
  • Cut into 6 squares and transfer to a baking sheet
  • Beat the egg in a cup then brush on top of the scones then add the remainder of the cheese on top
  • Bake in the centre of the oven for 12 minutes then remove
  • Allow to cool completely before serving with butter
  • Note – be careful not to overmix the scones after adding liquid as this is the most important part of creating a light and fluffy scone
